Bloxwich Carnival: And the Queen wore wellies!

Bloxwich Carnival Royalty 2012 – and the Queen wore wellies!

Saturday 16 June saw the the latest instalment of a fine old Bloxwich tradition dating back to 1919 – Bloxwich Carnival – this year brought forward from the traditional August date to link up with national and local celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

The village’s premier community event, which was revived in 2000 by a new Carnival Committee after a gap of fifteen years since the last such celebration, and with the support of other local organisations, notably the Rotary Club of Bloxwich Phoenix, is still the largest gathering of local people each year, usually holding a free Senior Citizens’ Party in July and bringing thousands together on Carnival Day.

And despite the poor weather on Saturday, which was also Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday, Bloxwich people didn’t let a little thing like howling wind and rain hold more than 2,000 of them back from having a good time celebrating in honour of Her Majesty, who would no doubt have sympathised with carnival-goers after that rather soggy Royal Pageant on the River Thames earlier this month!

This year, as before, Bloxwich Carnival took place at the King George V Playing Fields off Stafford Road, Bloxwich. And a great event fit for a Queen was planned – or in this case, several queens, as the right Royal connection of the show was enhanced by inviting past Bloxwich Carnival Queens to join in the Jubilee fun!

These days the carnival no longer has its traditional procession around the streets of Bloxwich, largely thanks to the introduction of excessive charges for road closures and ‘health and safety’ – but a brilliant new idea from the Committee for this year’s event was to start off with a ‘mini-procession’ from All Saints Church to the Playing Fields, comprising a wonderful white coach drawn by a pair of Shire Horses and containing the new Bloxwich Carnival Queen, Princess and Rosebud plus last year’s queen, preceded by the Carnival Committee Chairman in his Land Rover and followed by The Mayor and Mayoress of Walsall in the mayoral Jaguar.

Off to the Carnival!

The carnival itself, which is supported by Walsall Council, began at 12 noon, this year with free admission to all-comers in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and was formally opened by the Mayor Cllr Dennis Anson at 12.30pm.  Introduced by Carnival Committee Chairman Mr Terry Bate, the Mayor welcomed one and all from the vantage point of Walsall Council’s MOVE truck stage.

Next, Linda Lister, Estates Service Manager of Walsall Housing Group, formally presented Bloxwich Carnival Committee Chairman Terry Bate with a cheque for £4,000 in support of the 2012 carnival.

The Mayor was then joined by the Mayoress Mrs Kate Anson and Mr. David Winnick, MP for Walsall North in crowning the new Carnival Queen, Alice Jones, Princess Amelia Ellis and Rosebud Megan Leigh Small.  All received bouquets of flowers, and in addition 2011 Queen Abigail Nicholls also received a cheque for £100 in recognition of all her hard work for Bloxwich in the past year.

This was followed by the awarding of medals to eleven young Carnival Ambassadors, each having been nominated for their outstanding qualities by local primary schools.  They were:

Sophie Guy of Abbey Primary School, Zayn Adshead and McKenzie Lowndes of Bloxwich CE Primary School, Jack Griffiths and Lucy Denny of Christ Church CE Primary School, Demi Leigh Butler and Reece Arnold of Blakenall Heath Junior School, Owen Hansford and Ellie-Mai Stanton of Green Rockk Primary School, Libby Lewis of Mossley Primary School and Marybeth Williams of St Peter’s RC Primary School. Harrison Fletcher of Mossley Primary School was unable to attend.

Following the crownings and awards, some special presentations of posies to past Bloxwich Carnival Queens were also made, including to Jessica Jones (2010), Tammy Scale (2003), Samantha Footman (2008), and Sally Kirk (2009).

The rest of the event then got under way, with many stalls (though fewer than usual due to the weather) and displays plus rides, seaside donkeys, and amazing arena entertainment (without the advertised Zumba dancers, who did not go on due to the weather) ensuing for the rest of the afternoon, supported by the traditional presence of the great Pat Collins Fun Fair, an association dating back to the old Bloxwich Wakes.

The two spectacular arena acts alternated through the rest of the afternoon: the amazing UK FMX freestyle motorcycle stunt team, and the weird, wacky and wonderful Bruce Airhead thrilled, amazed and amused the crowds until the arena programme concluded, though sadly by 3.30pm the weather had worsened such that it was no longer possible to continue with UK FMX’s motorcycle stunts for safety reasons.

Throughout the day, of course, the legendary Pat Collins Fun Fair, traditionally associated with Bloxwich Carnival since the great days of the Wakes, also kept things humming and provided fun and fear for all who dared, including the beautiful and fearless Bloxwich Carnival Royalty!

There is no doubt that Bloxwich Carnival, whatever the weather, is a fantastic community event both for Bloxwich and for residents who live in other parts of the borough and is a grand tradition and a great day out for all the family. The Committee sends thanks to all who turned out to support the event, and stayed on for some serious fun!

Hopefully next year the sun will shine – and the Queen won’t have to wear wellies!

Bloxwich brings the Diamond Jubilee

Abigail Nicholls Jessica Jones and Nikki Rolls with bunting

Saturday shoppers in Bloxwich enjoyed a local flavour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee yesterday as Bloxwich Business Partnership, Walsall Council and local organisations brought a second day of right Royal celebrations into the village.

Despite the grey and windy weather, Bloxwich folk young and old alike were able to get a real sense of the national Royal occasion thanks to hundreds of yards of colourful bunting, much of it hand made by local schools, which fluttered everywhere, and the numerous inviting High Street shops with their specially decorated Diamond Jubilee windows, many of which were entered in a special competition, as well as local pubs.

Bloxwich is well-known for its many historic local pubs, and several hostelries were decorated for the Diamond Jubilee, notably the Spotted Cow and the legendary Turf Tavern in Wolverhampton Road and the Prince of Wales in High Street.

And Nikki Rolls of Walsall Council’s Regeneration department joined present and past Bloxwich Carnival Queens Abigail Nicholls and Jessica Jones in hanging hand-made bunting along the railings of the Promenade Gardens (see picture at top of page), as well as spending much of the day travelling up and down the High Street and round the Market Square handing out Bostin Bloxwich booklets and chatting to shoppers and local youngsters.

Asda helps Bloxwich residents celebrate Jubilee in style

Patrons of Bloxwich Children’s Centre are jumping with Jubeliee-ation after receiving a ‘feast fit for a Queen’ from Asda’s store on Woodhall Street.

After the store heard about their preparations to stage their own Jubilee party, staff and families from the centre were presented  with hampers of tasty treats to help them celebrate in style throughout the day, and well into the ‘knight’ (see picture, above, with store manager Brett Matthews (Union Flag waistcoat), Rob Hendon (Community Colleague, in green), Naila Aziz (in blue) and Jenny Holmes (in red)).

Bloxwich Children’s Centre, based on Mossley Lane, supports children and families in the community with everything from parent training courses to future employment training, day care services to breakfast clubs, as well as numerous health services.

Organiser and centre employee, Naila Aziz, said: “Our Jubilee party has been organised as a token of thanks to all the families who visit the centre and utilise its resources.

“Everyone leads such busy lives and a Jubilee party is a great way to get to know our neighbours, our patrons and other members of the community in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, plus, we’re all really proud of our Monarchy and the way they represent our country.

“We are overjoyed with Asda Bloxwich’s donation. It has taken a big strain off the fundraising side of the Jubilee party and we will definitely be putting the store on our honours list!”

Brett Matthews, general store manager at Asda Bloxwich, said: “The idea of community is very important at Asda. It is brilliant to see our neighbours working and coming together to share in the Jubilee celebrations, while creating some fantastic memories for their families. We all felt this deserved a bit of recognition and we hope our hamper donations will be enjoyed by all.”

At the party, which took place yesterday, as a ‘tip of the crown’ to past street parties, the centre organised games and activities such as pass the parcel and raffles, fancy dress for the children with a Kings and Queens theme, as well as handing out special jubilee celebration mugs as a keepsake of the day.

Street party fever hits Bloxwich and the borough!

Coronation Party, Abbotts St, Bloxwich, 1953.

Royal party fever will be sweeping Bloxwich and across Walsall borough this Diamond Jubilee weekend as residents toast the Queen’s 60th anniversary year.

A total of 27 street parties will be taking place across Walsall between Saturday 2 June and Tuesday 4 June – compared to seven that were held for last year’s Royal wedding.

The Mayor of Walsall, Councillor Dennis Anson, said he was thrilled that local people were showing their support for such an important anniversary.

“There is a real feelgood factor around as we head into the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend and Walsall is leading the way.

“Fingers crossed for another spell of warm weather as the parties get under way.”

Councillor Anthony Harris, Walsall Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “Well done Walsall on showing such sterling support for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

“I’m delighted to see so many residents of all ages getting into the celebratory spirit in this way.

“I would like to wish people all the best as they enjoy this extended Bank Holiday weekend and toast Her Majesty!”

The street parties have been organised as private events by residents who have sorted out invitations and road closures where necessary.

Have a Jolly Bostin’ Jubilee Jamboree in Old Wedgbury Town!

Jolly Jubilee Jamboree

Jolly old pals at the professional theatre company “Don’t Go into the Cellar!” are to bring another slice of vintage entertainment to the Black Country this June, to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

Wednesbury’s Museum & Art gallery will play host to “A Jolly Bostin Jubilee Jamboree!” on Saturday 2nd June at 7pm, and the performance will feature star turns from Victorian and Edwardian music hall stars such as Marie Lloyd, Dan Leno, Tod Slaughter and Le Petomane – or at least, actors impersonating them!

The fun interactive show will feature many well-known music hall songs and comedy skits, and audience participation will be actively encouraged! The vintage variety show, in the style of the BBC’s much-loved series “The Good Old Days”, will be the first in a proposed series of performances across the Black Country region.

The performance will also feature a specially-commissioned Victorian-style house-band! “The Penny Farthings” will supply live musical accompaniment to the acts, in the style that variety artistes of the day would have been familiar with. Popular songs to be played include “The Cock Linnet Song” and “Knees Up Mother Brown”. The show will finish with an audience sing-a-long of favourites from Last Night of the Proms.

The Birmingham theatre company has already established itself as the UKs only professional troupe that specialises in original Victorian ghost and horror tales, Music Hall revivals and Sherlock Holmes shows.

The theatre company’s Director, Rachel Green, is delighted that Cellar is able to help Sandwell celebrate the Jubilee in traditional style, the way the region would have done 100 years ago or more.

Rachel says, “We are thrilled to present this traditional theatre show and re-introduce audiences to the Victorian Era’s very own stage superstars!”

Tickets £6.00 / £5.00 children can be purchased directly from the Museum by calling 0121 556 0683.

Walsall will be a sea of red, white and blue, say Walsall Council, as residents celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style over the Bank Holiday weekend – with twenty street parties taking place all over the borough.

This is double the amount of parties that were held for the Royal wedding last April.

The deadline for applications for street parties that require road closures was 23 May.

Budding revellers were asked to contact the borough’s Safety Advisory Group which will consider any safety issues.
Traffic management officers will also consider if a road closure is appropriate at the same time and inform the organiser of the decision.

The 20 parties that have been given permission so far over the four day holiday weekend period are:

Saturday 2 June – Daisy Bank Crescent, Walsall, Myatt Avenue, Aldridge, Greenhill Way, Aldridge.

Sunday 3 June – Greenwood Park, Aldridge, Hough Road, Pleck, Pershore Close / Tintern Way, Bloxwich, Westbourne Street, Walsall, Pomeroy Road / Princep Close, Pheasey, Hobart Drive, Walsall, Walsall Town Centre (Darwall Street / Leicester Street), Hay Hill, Orchard Hills, Aldridge.

Tuesday 5 June – Hereford Close, Aldridge, Bank Street, Walsall (Walsall Arms Public House), St Francis Close, Pelsall, Valley Road, Bloxwich.

The Safety Advisory Group meeting on 25 May will finalise all applications.

For information and advice on street parties please contact Campbell Gray Walsall Council technical and safety development officer on 01922 650335. Residents can also go online to http://cms.walsall.gov.uk/index/leisure_sports_community/street_parties_sag.htm for advice and guidance.

Book your place at Diamond Jubilee Barr Beacon

Aldridge-Brownhills Coat of Arms
The old Aldridge-Brownhills Coat of Arms includes the Barr Beacon aflame.

Up to 200 residents will be able to join celebrations at a borough landmark next month when a beacon is lit in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year.

Barr Beacon will be lit on Monday 4 June 2012 as part of a celebration programme of events spanning the extended Bank Holiday weekend.

The Queen will light the National Beacon in London at around 10.30pm on Monday 4 June as the last beacon in the UK chain.

Beacons will be lit all over the country and abroad to commemorate the Queen becoming only the second Monarch in British history to achieve 60 years on the throne.

Advance tickets will need to be booked for the Barr Beacon event, which is expected to be extremely popular, and people will be able to do so from 10am on Tuesday 29 May 2012.

Chairman of Barr Beacon Trust, Councillor Adrian Andrew, said: “We are so proud that Barr Beacon is to be one of the sites taking part in the official celebration of such a momentous occasion.

“While we would love to be able to welcome everyone to this much-loved landmark we have to put people’s safety first and that is why we have limited places to 200.

“We are announcing the arrangements for ticket bookings through all communication channels so that we try and reach as many people as possible, including those who do not have internet access.

“We are also asking community organisations throughout the borough to spread the word among all those they come into contact with.

“We have been informed that our beacon will be lit at 10.15pm and as Barr Beacon is Walsall’s highest point the spectacle can be enjoyed all over the borough and beyond.”

Tickets will be available from 10am on Tuesday 29 May and people can either telephone 01922 459813 to book or go to http://countryside.fikket.com and choose the ‘diamond jubilee’ event.
